Just about everyone knows what a LEGO brick is; the colorful block that comes in various sizes geared to get kids to use their imagination as they create. The LEGO company was started in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, but it was in 1958 that the now famous LEGO brick was patented beginning a limitless trip to the many roads of boundless creativity using the simple bricks even into the busy technological age of today.

The first Lego bricks were developed in the 1940′s

In 1949 the first plastic LEGO Automatic Binding Brick in four colors with four and eight studs was born. Packaging created to build specific LEGO play structures came in the 1950′s and by 1958 the LEGO brick was perfected into a more stable product that is what is still being sold and used today.

LEGO fans have grown up to create home decor and furnishings out of the fun bricks.

Perhaps one of the core reasons that LEGO has survived through generations of fun is that the company continues to stay in the Kristiansen family and is now run by the founders grandchild. LEGO thrives simply by one using their mind to have fun thinking and improvising in order to use their hands to creatively invent and build unique LEGO designs and structures.

Never stop thinking and using imagination and never be afraid to dance!

Having a beautifully furnished home to show off is the goal for mostly everyone. Decorating the abode can get costly so redecorating using items that you already own or acquire can be the perfect solution to obtaining a beautiful decor without breaking the budget.

Enjoy watching my fab video discussing ideas to decorate your own metal cabinet!

Metal cabinets are versatile and can be used for many applications beyond the office.

Traditionally a metal cabinet is thought of the standard filing or storage furnishing found in the office. Decorate a metal cabinet and it will turn into a beautiful piece of furniture to be used in the bedroom, kitchen, dining room or living room.

  • A tall metal file cabinet can be used as a dresser in the bedroom with drawers that are wonderfully deep to fit all of the clothes.
  • Turn a metal storage cabinet into an armoire for the bedroom or kitchen.
  • Create a kitchen island by repurposing a metal cabinet.

The challenge of repurposing a metal cabinet for a more decorative furnishing is how to go about dressing it up for the decor.

  • Paint is the simplest solution. Use a primer so that the paint adheres to the metal, then paint using a high gloss enamel in a color to complement the decor.

    homejelly

    homejelly

  • Take paint one step further with a faux technique turning the metal into the look of wood or marble.
  • Use stencils to add a special touch to the metal furnishing.
  • Vinyl decals used for wall decor can also be the perfect way to transform a metal cabinet into beautiful decor.
  • Camouflage the cabinet with a collage of favorite pages from books, magazines or music pages using the decoupage method with glue and a top varnish.

  • Cover the cabinet with wallpaper to turn it into a work of art. Finish it with a coat of polyurethane for wear ability.

  • Use a wallpaper or fabric to cover the draws or doors and finish off the balance with a coat of paint.

  • Duct tape is not just for repair jobs anymore. This wonderful tape comes in an array of colors and designs that can be used to transform and decorate furnishings that are destined for the storage room. Cover a metal cabinet with a snake skin duct tape for a designer piece of furnishing. Color block with a number of bright color stripes to use a metal cabinet as a dresser in the kids room or play room.

No matter how large of an abode one resides in, there is always a need for furnishings to store belongings. Items that you find or may already own can be magically turned into brand new decor that will work for you and look beautiful.

Decorating is about using imagination and letting your creative side shine. Never be afraid to dance!

Dressers can be used for more than just storing clothes away in the bedroom. Often when it comes time to redecorate the old dressers are tossed to the curb. These dressers can be repurposed for a multitude of decor possibilities saving them from ending up as another item in a landfill.

Watch me on this eHow video instructing on ideas for repurposing a dresser!

A dresser can be repurposed into the center of entertainment.

With media technology growing with the development of thin, flat screen TVs and small video devices there is no longer a need for a huge media center to be built around the equipment.

  • Repurpose a beautiful found dresser into a media center. Simply take out the top draws and finish the openings for video players. Place the TV on top and you are ready to watch favorite movies.

Hate that old dresser that was a hand-me-down or are you just ready for a new look, then use the dresser for a new purpose in a spot that is hidden away.

  • Repurpose a dresser as a tool chest in the garage.
  • Place it in the basement to store away out of season clothing or the beach towels and blankets.

Dressers can be redesigned for a life in a new room of fun.

Craft and Toy rooms are always in need of places to store away items when not being used.

  • Paint the old dresser in a fun color. Add new knobs and the kids will have fun storing toys and games away.
  • Remove drawers and repurpose a dresser with pretty baskets to store away the goodies.

The challenge is always on to create beautifully decorated abode. These days, more than ever, budget is also a factor when choosing furnishings to adorn the home. This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative and have fun becoming one with the task of decorating.

Decoupage is more than just for Kindergarteners.

The technique of decoupage brings back memories of having fun in the early school days covering balloons in art class and getting covered with glue. Decoupage has grown up and has become a wonderful application for decorating.

Resurrect an old piece of wood furniture, a floor, or even a dress a wall using the old fashioned fun of decoupage.

  • An old table or dresser can be transformed into a brand new piece of furniture.

  • Revive an old wood floor or dress a cement floor in decoupage.
  • Adorn an accent wall using the technique of decoupage.

Decoupage is a wonderful eco-friendly and fun green activity that the entire family can enjoy helping out with.

Save the old table from the dump along with books and other materials that can be repurposed for a new piece of furnishing simply with a bit of glue and varnish.

HGTV

Decide on what your project will be; are you covering a piece of furniture or an entire floor in the room.

Gather up the simple supplies that will be needed for the project.

  • Have fun gathering paper to use for the project such as old book pages, newspapers, phonebooks, maps, music pages, paper bags, or any other paper that can be cut up and glued.
  • PVA glue, which stands for Polyvinyl acetates, is simply the old-fashioned white glue used in your early school days.
  • Scissors.
  • Paintbrush and/ or roller.
  • Rubber roller.
  • Enough varnish to cover the project, for a floor you will want to use a few of coats of polyurethane.
  • Sandpaper or electric sander will be needed if covering a shiny surface.

Time to have fun and create your new custom designer furnishing.

1.            If covering a gloss painted surface than use some sandpaper to sand the gloss off. For a floor you can use an electric sander.

2.            Make sure your surfaces are clean of any dust and dirt.

3.            Time to have fun and cut up your paper. Cut the pages into even squares or be free and just cut into uneven shapes. The pieces should not be too big or small; keep them around three inches square. Paper bags or brown paper can be torn instead of cut for added interest.

4.            Start with one corner and paint the glue onto a small section at a time and place your cut out paper pieces smoothed out on top of glue. When overlapping add some extra glue to paper to ensure that all of the paper and its edges will be glued down to the surface. Work your way out with the glue and paper until the surfaces are completely covered. Make sure that surfaces are completely smooth and free of bubbles. A rubber roller will help smooth out any bubbles.

Be creative and add a surprise shape or silhouette to stand out as a design statement in the center or corner of your project.

5.            Edges need loving care on furniture; in order to finish the edges of furniture be careful not to bunch up the paper when wrapping a corner or edge. For rounded pieces let your paper extend past the edge then grab the scissors and splice the paper with parallel cuts towards the edge of the furniture piece. This will allow you to wrap the edges smoothly to the underside (make sure the paper is glued to stick to surfaces). If the edge has a detail then use a finger to smooth the paper into the detail. Cover the bottom side of the piece of furniture and finish by covering the edges from the top that have been wrapped.

6.            Time to finish the project. Simply brush on the varnish over the complete surfaces that have been decoupaged. You can use a roller to cover a large surface like the floor or wall. For several coats make sure that the appropriate time is given for drying between coats.

Enjoy your new furnishings. Your abode is your own private art gallery. Display your decor as proudly as an artist would show off his or her creations. The abode is your own private oasis to showcase your personality so let the inner you shine through the decor and never be afraid to dance!

With today’s weather and economic climate people have become more aware of using what we have in order to live a sustainable existence. A sustainable lifestyle need not be a dull one. Recreating by using what we already have one can achieve a beautiful, yet sustainable, surrounding to reside in.

The obvious comes to mind when contemplating a sustainable lifestyle:

  • Farm animals: animals should be seen as sustainable creatures in that when they are not killed for food they serve to sustain life. Happy and content cows will consistently provide milk and remember a chicken wing gets hot when you turn it on so keep the chicks calm and they will provide an abundance of eggs to you.
  • Vegetable gardens when taken care of will give back as they grow in size.
  • Solar panels and windmills provide energy to power lights and needs without depending on outside companies that feed pollution into the environment.

Sustainable living also involves recycling goods one already possesses into new uses to sustain the living environment.

Forgotten items stored away can be repurposed into useful accessories for the abode.

It is time to dig through all of that stuff in the attic and basement that you do not need but are too attached with to get rid of. The items that are full of memories and just cannot be parted with can be repurposed and used in our homes in unique ways.

  • Evening gowns can be taken apart and reused to make pretty valances for your windows.
  • Coats can be repurposed to make pillows for a sofa or to upholster a chair or stool.
  • Old leather skirts and pants can be taken apart and reused to make pillows or for reupholstering.
  • A full length fur coat can be made into a throw for the living room. A stole or shorter coat can be made into a scarf to drape across the bed. Any extra fur can be made into pillows.
  • Stored away drapes can be cleaned and repurposed to upholster a chair or bench.
  • Found scarves can be used to redo a lampshade cover or made into a pillow. scarves pillows, ounodesign
  • The stuffing from old bed pillows can be taken out and reused to stuff new throw pillows.
  • Sweaters, tee shirts and shirts, or blouses, can be made into pillows. Cut the sleeves off, stuff with filler and sew up the collar and bottom.
  • Jeans can be reused for many different things. Window treatments, pillows, a lamp shade, a rag rug and a chair seat.denim chair, recycledelight
  • For anyone who enjoys sewing, all fabrics can be cut up and used as patches for a quilt. Or take a cute baby outfit and sew it onto a backing to make a pillow square for a child’s room.
  • Rag rugs and braided rugs can be made from most any type of fabric. For a braided rug you will use old clothes or bedding cut into strips to braid and sew together. You will need some canvas, a latch hook and recycled fabric for a rag rug.
  • Old belts and watches can be reused as drawer pulls.
  • Ties and scarves can be sewn together and used for a window valance.
  • Paint old wood furniture with high gloss enamel in a color that you like and you have a new piece of furniture that you can, and want, to use.IMG_0870
  • Repurpose drawers from discarded dressers as wall hung shelves.
  • Old magazines and books might have a photo or old ad that you are attracted to. Cut them out and place these in frames and create a grouping on a wall.
  • Newspapers and magazines can be cut and used to weave baskets.
  • Newspapers can be repurposed into a yarn that can be used to weave a chair or rug.

Repurposing for a sustainable life requires the ability to visualize and be resourceful. Everyone should learn how to be prepared to live a sustainable life in order to help save the Earth’s resources. Purge the closets, attic, and basement of the ancient history that has accumulated, and sustain the abode’s décor with repurposed inventiveness.

Have a happy sustained life and never be afraid to dance!

Glitz and glam are nice and fun but work best when understated. It is fine to add a bit of shine to the decor but be careful not to cross the line into tacky. It is important to dress to impress but to do it with an a style that does not shout at people when they enter the room.

Chrome and mirrors can make for beautiful furnishings.

Shiny surfaces can look attractive in a room opening up the space. When there are too many glittering pieces then it will just create a funhouse, room full of mirrors effect.

  • One accent piece of furniture crafted from chrome or mirror can create a beautiful conversation piece in the room.

    Julian Chichester

    Julian Chichester

The bedrooms focus is the bed; make it shine on center stage.

A bed frame crafted from chrome or mirror can be interesting and add sparkle in the bedroom. The rest of the room must be then decorated with pieces that will complement the bed instead of fight with it.

  • Paint an accent wall behind the beds headboard in a deep brown or grey to act as a backdrop for the prized piece of furniture. Keep the other walls neutral.
  • Bedding should not be bold. Keep the bed covers in soft colors and textured fabrics to compliment the shiny frame and promote peaceful sleep. Moss green, taupe and grey work well as well as different shades of whites.

    storminteriors.com

    storminteriors.com

  • Use cabinetry with wood finishes and bring in a shot of chrome with the draw pulls to compliment the bed.

    Beverly Wilshire

    Beverly Wilshire

  • Be careful with adding mirrors to the room. Save the full length mirror for the closet or bathroom or else the bed and mirror will be at war and sleeping will not come easily.
  • Add a little color with accessories but stay away from patterns. Remember shiny surfaces reflect; do you really want to have patterns bouncing back at you in the bed frame. Pillows, rugs and throws can be fun in jewel tones of blue, purple, red and orange.

If you love the idea of a shiny bed frame but is not within the budget then create your own.

Any bed can be turned into a silver haven worthy of sending a princess to dreamland with sandpaper, primer and metallic paint.

  • Paint your way to a shiny bed. Purchase a wood frame bed. Sand the wood, prime the frame and then paint the bed with a couple of coats of a shiny silver metallic paint. Finish off your lovely bed with a couple of coats of high gloss polyurethane to achieve a hard and durable finish.
  • Upholster a headboard in a silver metallic fabric or vinyl.ESF-623-Lorena-Bed_1, furniturediscovery
  • Simply purchase satin bedding in silver. Coordinate with accessories sewn from fabric with metallic fibers.furniturecart

Downsizing in today’s economy has become the norm for most. You will be paying larger bucks and getting smaller spaces. Do not despair when moving from a larger bedroom into a cozy room to sleep peacefully in.

There is only one bedroom decor standard that needs to be followed.

No matter how you decide to decorate the bedroom one basic should be applied; the head of the bed should face the door entering the room.

A smaller space means more room for creative decorating when placing a bed.

Place a bed against a wall. If you do not have a partner or do not mind climbing over someone, a double bed or even a queen size, next to the wall can open of floor space for additional uses and room.retrorenovation

Center the headboard against the window. A low headboard or open metal headboard will still allow for the sunlight to come in if the bed’s head is positioned against the window. Keep in mind that if there is heat below the window you will need to allow for a few inches between the heater and the bed to allow for the heat to safely escape.IMG_3994

No room for a bedside table or lamp do not fret. Place a small shelf on the wall behind the bed. Hang small light pendants from the ceiling, or use wall mounted sconces, on both sides of the bed for bedtime reading.

Cut out the fancy bed to save on room. A headboard and footboard can take away extra precious needed floor space. Instead of buying an expensive bed, use a basic metal frame with a box spring and mattress. Instead of a headboard protruding into the room hang a soft quilt on the wall at the head of the bed to take the place of a the lavish headboard.

Think outside of the box with other bed options.

  • Loft beds can be a great option for adults as well as kids. They create a second story to use as your “bedroom”, opening up an area for storage, desk or seating underneath. Be prepared to crawl to the foot of the bed to climb up and down a ladder.
  • Keep the room free and clear during the day for multiple use as a gym, office, or sitting area by using a Murphy bed. Keep in mind that nap time might mean clearing the room and pulling the bed out during the day. Pull down beds do have the advantage of not needing to be made, just simply store the bed back into its upright space hidden away for a quick clean up.
  • Futons create a sofa with a comfortable bed, without that uncomfortable bar found across traditional sofa beds. These can be reasonably purchased. IKEA has some good values.

A cozy bedroom can be a comfy retreat. Large is not always better. On a cold winter’s night a small room with fluffy comforters can provide a sense of comfort that a large room could not provide. Treat yourself with beautiful sheets and bedding.

Snuggle in for a great night’s sleep and peaceful dreams and never be afraid to dance!
